Neko Bay

Our first landing on the Antarctic Mainland.

Icefall on the glacier overhanging the bay. We heard and saw explosions from such falls throughout our time ashore, but this was the only one we captured on film.

Admiralte Brown Argentine Base

Although this base is not currently occupied, people from the yacht were maintaining the buildings on the far right.

Lemaire Channel

We were blocked by ice, and unable to reach the Ukrainian base, but the channel itselg provided some of the most dramatic scenery of the trip. Europa threaded her way through icebergs of all sizes, some the resting places of leopard, crab-eater, and fur seals.

We went ashore on Peterman Island, where three scientists were camped. They were doing research on the Adelie penguin colony. Possibly due to global warming, the adelies are being replaced by gentoo penguins (which prefer a warmer climate). While we were there, it rained! In the 11 years this reserach has been carried out, it has never rained.
Note that the researchers were not staying in the huts on the left, which are abandoned, but in the small yellow tents on the right.

Jougla Point

The "Whalebone Beach" near the British base at Port Lockroy.
